同名展覧会のカタログ。日本の尼門跡の文化を西洋に初めて
紹介したこの展覧会は、M.グレイビル教授、真鍋俊照教授が
大木貞子博士とともに企画構成。
尼門跡に伝わる書の写真、儀式用具、門跡頂相をはじめ、
日本の尼僧の生活を窺える品々を展示したもので、いずれの
作品も尼門跡を離れたのは初めてのこと。

ritual objects, portraits of abbesses and furnishings related to the
daily lives of Japaese
Buddhist nuns that were exhibited by the Insititute at Columbia University
in November
and December 1998. It was the first time these objects had ever been
removed from the convents.

この展覧会は、国際日本文化研究センターの
パトリシア・フィスター教授が中心となって構成された。

美術（絵画・書・彫刻など）の枠を集めたものとなっている。

assistance of Dr. Sadako Ohki
(Yale University Art Gallery) and Prof. Sonja Arntzen (University of
Toronto) and sponsored by the Japan
Foundation and the Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies. Classical
handwritten kana writing is a
complex syllabic writing system that evolved from cursively written
Chinese characters.
Widely used in documents fron the tenth through the nineteenth centuries,
a knowledge of it is
crucial for all scholars of pre-modern Japan. The CD-ROM displays in
full motion the writing
process for kana characters, presents interactive reading practice with
medieval and pre-modern
masterpieces, and offers the capability the user's own kana work using
